NYS FOP Statement regarding Retired Law Enforcement Officers

The New York State Fraternal Order of Police joins all our brother and sister officers in asking that the Legislature Act immediately to amend the NY Safe Act to allow retired Law Enforcement Officers to lawfully possess the weapons they retired with;

These men and women honorably served the people of New York State and continue to be invaluable resource to us all;

While it is in everyone's best interest to keep guns out of the wrong hands, there is a serious flaw in the legislation regarding this oversight;

We have approximately 100,000 retired law enforcement officers living in New York State. This statute as currently written essentially turns these men and women in to criminals;

Clearly, this was not the intention of our legislature;

We, the New York State Fraternal Order of Police implore our legislators to immediately amend the NY SAFE ACT to add an appropriate exemption to this law.
